THE Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Osun State Chapter went on sensitization campaigns across the length and breadth of Osogbo on Saturday, December 17, 2022.
The campaign started from the INEC office at Abere at 10.50am through Gbongan Road to Olaiya, Workers Drive, Oja-Oba, Post-Office Road and all other strategic places to create awareness for voters to come for their Permanent Voters Cards (PVCs) to enable them vote candidates and party of their choice.
In a chat with the Press at Oja-Oba, the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Dr (Barrister) Mutiu Agboke said the Commission is in custody of 407,165 PVCs out of which only 1,032 have been collected between December 12 and 17, 2022.
According to him, it is a sad development for INEC hence the reason to bring the awareness to doors of eligible voters to come in large number for the collection of their PVCS.
Agboke said apart from non collection of PVC by voters, the commission is ready for the 2023 general elections having received a total of 5,306 Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) machines.
He said “Whether we like it or not in Nigeria today non collection of PVC is a big problem for INEC and unfortunately, we have discovered that some individuals have gone ahead purchasing PVCs for the electorates.
“So there is need for us to scale up the level of awareness for the people to go and collect it, for example when I resumed in Osun we have 408,197 PVCs and between December 12 and 17, only 1,032 PVCs have been collected.
“As I speak to you now, we have 407,165, waiting for collection. If we have over 400,000 PVC, and only 1,000 have been collected, it means we’ve not done anything, it means people have not really come out. So first thing we have to do is to scale up our level of awareness.”
Meanwhile, Agboke emphasised that the commission embarked on the awareness campaign to ensure that the masses realize the need to collect their PVCs.
He went further that the commission “have received 5,306 BVAS, we are ready. We are charging, configurating, training our staffs and partnering with stakeholders daily. We have always been engaging our stakeholders”.
On the safety of INEC equipments and staff, he said security have been beefed up at all INEC offices across the state.
He enjoined all eligible voters to visit the Local Government offices and state headquarter to collect their PVC and vote candidates of their choice in 2023.
The Convener of PVC Ride, Akorede Balogun who came from Lagos stressed the importance and need for the collection of their PVCs.
Balogun said “aside that people come out to register, they must see the need to collect their PVCs and vote”.
