The Aare Ona Kakanfo and leader of a faction of Oodua People’s Congress (OPC), Aare Gani Adams went back into the memory lane on how the cultural organization was formed in Nigeria.
He said they have learnt their lessons since OPC was formed in 1998,
“The noise we heard in the year 2000 to 2005 were those berating the activities of the organization, while some are for us some are against us. It was the noise of inexperience, noise of immaturity.”
“While some are saying we should go ahead to terrify and scare the enemies others are saying we are not doing well the way we are going, that we are thugs who came to destroy everything in Yorubaland.”
“This things are into two perspectives, negative news goes viral than positive news. One school of thoughts said if we continue our activities as we were doing in 2001, 2002 to 2005 the world would have turned us to a terrorist organization.”
“As we see the challenges at that time, some were due to our mistakes while in another angle the Federal Government provoked us. That propelled us to start adjusting ourselves to become an association to be reckoned with forever, so that it would be useful for all Yoruba sons and daughters and to become a successful association.”
“When armed robbers invaded Yorubaland then, OPC worked hard to contain them but government security agents frustrated all our efforts. They said we took laws into our hands. The state and federal government connived together against us, OPC now became an orphan being tossed up and down.”
“They wanted to turn us to a terrorist organization, and this was a group formed with our lives on the lines and they wanted to destroy the organization. We then called ourselves to order that even if we want to fight for the people let us take permission from them. We took permission from the federal government to secure our people.”
Aare Gani Adams went to talk about how he and some of his members were detained in various prisons to the extent that the Yoruba people they are fighting for are also against them.
