Academic Activities Grounded In FUTA As Students Protest Hike In Tuition

Students of the Federal University of Technology Akure, FUTA on Monday completely blocked the Akure-Ilesa road, protesting tuition hike by the management of the institution.

The situation led to traffic jam on the road for hours as the students barricaded the ever busy expressway.

The students carried various placards and chanted solidarity songs to show their displeasure.

Speaking to newsmen, the President of FUTA Student Union, Comrade Olayemi Oluwasoromidayo also known as Dmainman pleaded with the management of the school to revert to the old school fees in view of the current economic challenges in the country.

Comrade Oluwasoromidayi said the student body had met with the management many times but it refused to yield to their demands hence their decision to stage a protest.

He said the last increment was not even up to one year before the new hike was effected.

Comrade Oluwasoromidayo pointed out that the management had increased the school fees to over 200,000 naira for freshers while old Students who were paying 35,000 would now pay 130,000 naira.

He said they would continue to stage the protest until their demand was met.

The school management was said to be in a crucial meeting when newsmen visited the school even as security agents were fully on ground to ensure that the protest did not degenerate into any form of violence.
