ARREST ALLEGATION: If El-Rufai Can Lie Against A Dying Yar'adua, Is It The Living Tinubu He Can't Lie Against?

SELF styled TableShaker, Reno Omokri has described former Governor of Kaduna State, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai as a pathological liar over his reported alarm that he was going to be arrested by President Bola Tinubu’s government.

Omokri said El-Rufai had nowhere to go because he had been refused visa that was why he lied that he has put his plan to study abroad on hold.

“Recently, Malam Nasir el-Rufai, the former Governor of Kaduna, known as the Butcher of Kaduna, because of the Southern Kaduna Genocide, which occurred under his watch and which also ended when he left office, raised the alarm that there are plans to arrest him.

He further alleged that he had put his planned study abroad on hold to face the government because he was unafraid of the Tinubu administration.

But how true are these claims? First of all, if the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission investigates and finds him wanting for financial crimes, that is not a political action.

That is purely a law enforcement incident, and the only defence against that would not be that President Tinubu is after me. It would be that you are innocent.

However, the public needs to know that Nasir el-Rufai is a self-admitted pathological liar and manipulator.

On page 272 of ‘Power, Politics and Death: A Front-row Account of Nigeria Under the Late President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua’, written by former ThisDay editor and Spokesman to President Yar’adua, Mr Segun Adeniyi, Mr Adeniyi wrote as follows:

“On the way, Balat, himself a former Minister in Obasanjo’s government, asked, ‘Segun, this cabal thing, were you really a member?’ Before I could respond, former Federal Capital Territory minister, Mallam Nasir el-Rufai, who played a prominent role in the campaign that eventually brought Jonathan to power, interjected, ‘There was no cabal, WE CREATED THE MYTH IN THE MEDIA TO NEUTRALIZE TURAI’.

At that point, Turai Yar’adua was facing the worst time of her life. She was isolated and in deep anguish, and during her time of sorrow, Nasir el-Rufai was busy circulating lies about her leading a nonexistent cabal story because he was in exile over the multiple financial malfeasance he had been accused of by the Yar’adua administration.

If el-Rufai could lie against a man on his deathbed and his devastated wife, who is President Tinubu that he cannot lie against?

Also, Mr. el-Rufai accused Senator Shehu Sani and I of being recruited to destroy his reputation. How can that be possible when Mr. el-Rufai has no reputation to defend?

Nasir el-Rufai was described by his boss, former President Olusegun Obasanjo, as a known liar in his book, My Watch Volume 2. In that work, former President Obasanjo said as follows:

“Nasir’s penchant for reputation savaging is almost pathological. Why does he do it? I recognised his weaknesses; the worst being his inability to be loyal to anybody or any issue consistently for long, but only to Nasir el-Rufai. He barefacedly lied which he did to me against his colleagues and so-called friends. I have heard of how he ruthlessly savaged the reputation of his uncle, a man who was like, in the African setting, his foster father.

I shuddered when I heard the story of what he did to his half-brother in the Air Force who is senior to him in age.”

Nasir el-Rufai is a known liar who lied on October 1, 2015, that former President Jonathan spent ₦64 billion on Independence Day celebrations. This statement is a lie and was exposed as such by a Freedom of Information (FOI) request by BudgIT Nigeria on October 2, 2015, in which the director (Finance and Accounts) in the Permanent Secretary’s Office, Mohammed Garba, confirmed that Mr Nasir el-Rufai lied and that Mr. Jonathan did not even spend up to ₦1 billion on Independence Day celebrations.

And is it true that Nasir el-Rufai put his overseas travel on hold due to his patriotic stance to fight the government? If you believe that, you will believe anything.

The truth is that Nasir el-Rufai is having trouble securing visas to Europe and America because of his actions while he was Governor of Kaduna.

Please fact-check me: On February 6, 2019, after the then-Governor Nasir el-Rufai threatened to send Western observers back to their countries in “body bags” if they scrutinised the 2019 election too closely, the European Union (EU) issued a strongly worded statement to specifically censure Mr el-Rufai’s reckless statement, which was carried by the media with the headline “Your threat can’t stop us, EU replies el-Rufai.”

In the statement, the EU took Mr El-Rufai’s threats seriously, saying, inter alia,

“While the security of EU observers is of paramount importance and will remain under constant review, EU observers will continue their work across the country.”

It is doubtful that Mr. el-Rufai can even get a visa to Europe, America or Canada. It is more likely that he is using this false arrest claim to justify why he has not travelled as planned. Because that is what Nasir el-Rufai does best. He lies, and he manipulates.“
