Court sentences Ekiti student over phone theft

A Magistrate Court sitting in Ikere-Ekiti has sentenced 23-year-old Emmanuel Ekundayo, to one year in prison for stealing mobile phones belonging to some students of the Bamidele Olumilua University of Education, Science and Technology, Ikere-Ekiti (BOUESTI).

 

 

 

 

 

Ekundayo, who claimed to be a student of the Federal Polytechnic, Ado-Ekiti, was arraigned before Magistrate Dotun Omoteye on one count charge of stealing.

 

 

 

 

 

The culprit was apprehended on July 17, 2023, during one of the 2022/2023 first semester examinations at the Library Lecture Theatre while ransacking the bags of students doing examinations.

The accused pleaded guilty to the offence and was convicted by the Magistrate on the strength of the evidence before him, though with an option of fine.

 

 

 

 

 

Speaking after the judgement, the Acting Director of Legal Matters in the University, Barr. Busuyi Jayeoba, stated that the development would serve as a deterrent to others of his ilk and emphasised the University’s zero tolerance for all forms of criminality within its precincts.
