Events of the past four weeks starting from October 20, 2020, when the Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu declared a curfew in Lagos and the subsequent violence that followed the #ENDSARS protests; arsons, killings, destructions of goods and properties speak volume.
One major thing that is wrong with our so called leaders is that they do not feel the pulse of the people they lead or governed. Their advisers would not tell them what the people are facing, instead they feed them with lies that, “All is well.” even when it is obvious that some Nigerians can hardly afford a square meal a day.
When eminent personalities like the General Overseer of RCCG, Pastor Enoch Adeboye, Prof Wole Soyinka or former President Olusegun Obasanjo speak, they were branded the enemies of the state.
The election that ushered in the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari as the president was without doubt with the support of the majority. People were on the queue till midnight voting for a change they desired.
The story of Nigerians with Buhari administration is like a dog wagging its tail in 2015 now barking in 2020. Let the truth be told, Buhari has lost the support of the majority of eminent personalities and masses alike.
The political class especially in the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have failed Nigerians.
For us to have a radical departure from the past, our representatives, senators, governors and the president need to have foot civilian soldiers who are expected to mix-up with the masses in the markets, commercial buses, trains and newspaper stands to give these leaders weekly reports on the plights of the people and what their needs are.
Enough of branding anyone that criticized the government as being sponsored by the opposition or the usual ‘disgruntled elements.’
Nigerians need servant leaders that can be trusted, leaders that can ‘walk their talks’, leaders that would lead by examples. You cannot ban imported rice and refused to eat local rice leaving your followers to eat it while you and your families eat imported rice.
How would our leaders know that Nigerians are suffering when they do not pay for food, they neither pay for gas nor fuel, when they do not pay for electricity, when they enjoy free electricity with free convoy of cars, free accommodation and so on?
In fact, everything is free, how do we now expect them to feel what people are feeling? We have got to a stage that Nigerians have now turn to beggars on the streets which had been a taboo in the past.
The bubble that bursted in October 2020 was not only as a result of #ENDSARS protesters alone. But the ENDSARS protests became insult on the injuries Nigerians are already nursing daily having come out alive from over five months of the deadly and dreaded COVID-19.
The only reward an insensitive government can give was to increase fuel pump price and jerking up the tariff on electricity same day hoping that the people will give them thumb up.
It was yet another increase on fuel pump price at the weekend. Nigerians are groaning under hardships.
We have never had it so bad!
No wonder people broke into food warehouses to loot foodstuffs careless if they were caught or not. All these happened because Nigerians are hungry. This was different from those who were breaking into public/private shops stealing and looting. These are criminal elements taking advantage of the hungry.
The event of the past four weeks gave our leaders the ticking time bomb waiting to explode if urgent action is not taken to avert it.
Nigerians have been taken for a ride for many years, this did not start with the APC led administration but the PDP administration that looted our resources to the extent that Nigerians were groaning and bleeding.
The APC that said they came for a change at the federal level worsened the situation to the level that you begin to wonder if there is any difference between the two deep ‘blue seas’. It was scandal over scandals.
I thought APC will come with a difference, alas! No sense of direction, no clear policy, all they do is trials and errors. No specific plans whatsoever. If I have my ways, the next political dispensation would be minus APC and PDP political gladiators from 1999 to date.
It is not too late for all our elected leaders to change for the best and turn a new leaf. All that is needed; tell people the truth, give rooms for trust, lead by example, shun religion, shun ethnicity, shun corruption and appoint competent Nigerians into all available positions.
