The National Youth Service Corps has confirmed the death of five prospective corps members who were involved in a ghastly motor accident at the Abaji-Kwali end of the Abuja-Lokoja Expressway.
SaharaReporters learnt that the five were students of the University of Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, who were heading for the NYSC camp in Katsina State.
Another seven prospective corps members were injured and are reportedly battling for their lives at a government hospital in the Federal Capital Territory.
The NYSC noted in a release that the incident occurred about 2am on Wednesday, involving the five corps members who are from Akwa-Ibom and Imo states.
In a release, the NYSC Director of Press and Public Relations, Mrs Adenike Adeyemi, stated that the tragic incident left the scheme devastated as it was a “black Wednesday for the NYSC family.”
She said, “The Director-General and management commiserate with the families of five prospective corps members who lost their lives in a ghastly motor accident at about 2am on Wednesday.
“The Director-General also condoles with the governments and people of Akwa-Ibom and Imo states over the tragic incident that has left the scheme devastated. Indeed, it has been a black Wednesday for the NYSC family.”
