The House of Representatives has approved June 12 to be marked as Democracy Day in Nigeria. The approval followed the adoption of a report on a bill seeking to amend the Public Holidays Act 2004.
Considering the report at the plenary on Thursday, the lawmakers approved the amendments to three clauses ‎in the Act.
One of the clauses deleted May 29 as Democracy Day and also replaced the date with June 12.
Recall that in June this year, President Buhari however declared June 12th as the new date for the celebration of Nigeria’s Democracy Day in honor of late MKO Abiola, the presumed winner of the June 12, 1993 presidential election.
