Reading this piece on the activities of a member of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) which Mudashiru aka Jamani belongs will surprise you wealthy he is and he has been taking good care of his family.
Jamani, is not the usual ‘Area Boy’ or the uncouth, ill-mannered and bad-mouthed ‘Agbero’ you know.
Jamani does not look anything like the average area boy who is quick to go into a fight, break bottles and has marks all over his body.
He is very popular in the Ojota area of Lagos and seeing him for the first time will pass as a corporate executive with the way he dresses and his manner of approaching issues.
He is calm, nice, helpful and very civilized, no thanks to the fact that he had had some level of education, at least, he passed through secondary school before deciding to fend for himself at the demise of his father.

“I did not set out to become an Agbero but due to circumstances of life, I had no option but to seek for a means of livelihood,” Jamani began at when I had a brief chat with him a few days ago.
“I schooled at the Ojota Grammar School and I wanted to go to the university and read Mass Communication because I wanted to be a broadcaster. But in my final year, my father who was a commercial bus driver died in an accident.
He had four wives and my mother was the last wife, so my older brothers from the senior wives and my uncles shared his property and you can understand that little or nothing came to us.
Being the first child of my mother, I had to take care of her and my siblings, so I joined one of my father’s friends as a conductor.

I worked with the man for three years, saved money and was able to buy my own bus. To be a commercial bus driver in Lagos, you must be a member of the Union and because of my commitment and little education, I was made the PRO of the Ojota branch after a year.
From there, I rose to the position of the Secretary. I aligned myself with the MC Oluomo faction of the Union and with the recognition of my service to the Union, I became the Collector General.

What this means is that I am in charge of collecting dues from the drivers on a daily basis. I don’t go to the bus stops to collect these dues myself. The ‘boys’ collect the dues and hand them to me at the end of every day, while I, in turn, pass them to the Executives.
The ‘boys’ have a daily target to return and I also have a target of the money I would remit and you should know what that means.

I have invested wisely over the years. I have landed properties in Lagos and in Ogun State which is my state. I have buses I give out to drivers and they make a weekly in return. I have my personal house and knowing the value of education, my three children attend the best of schools and my wife runs a very successful business.
Without boasting, I make more money than most bankers but I am not a vain person. You will not see me involved in a violent act or fight anyone. I am very calm about any situation.
People think all area boys are uncivilized, vulgar, rude and insolent but I can tell you that we have graduates who became Agberos because they could not get jobs when they graduated from university.

Being an Agbero is not a profession so I know that one day, I will retire and go into full-time business but for now, it pays my bills and takes care of my family.”
