A thunder strike has killed eight cows in the Ori-Ohin community, located in Ifon, Ose Local Government Area of Ondo State, triggering reactions from residents and traditional authorities.

The incident occured on Sunday, April 6, 2025

The incident, which many described as “mysterious,” occurred on farmland allegedly encroached upon by Fulani herders, despite previous warnings and state legislation prohibiting open grazing.

Residents of the agrarian community believe the cows were killed as a consequence of trespassing on a sacred farmland, which had been granted to Ebira-speaking farmers from neighbouring Kogi State.

The farmland has long been sacred and has been respected by those who know its history,” said Joshua Ogunmola, a community member.

These cows had been destroying our farms. We have complained to the authorities, but nothing changed. The farmers resorted to spiritual measures, and then this thunder struck,” Ogunmola told The Gazette.

According to community sources, the farmland has long been considered sacred and was given to the Ebira farmers for cultivation, with the understanding that certain cultural practices would be upheld.

A spokesperson for the traditional ruler in Ori-Ohin, who requested anonymity, linked the thunder strike to continued trespass by the herders on the protected farmland, saying several warnings had previously been issued.

We told them to avoid these lands. Government law prohibits open grazing, and this is not the first time they’re violating it. This morning, we heard thunder struck and killed eight cows,” he said.

Ondo State enacted the Livestock Rearing and Grazing Regulation Law in 2021 to address the rising tensions between farmers and herders, prohibiting open grazing and unauthorised livestock movement.

Police spokesperson Alayande Olushola Adeyinka confirmed the incident on Monday, describing the deaths as the result of a “natural phenomenon” and clarifying that no criminal investigation would be launched.

I can confirm that eight cows were killed by a thunder strike on Sunday in Ori-Ohin. This is a natural event. We are not attributing it to any person or group,” Mr Adeyinka said.

He added that security personnel had been stationed in the area for the past two weeks following community complaints about herder activity and had not observed any indication of imminent violence.

Our officers are conducting soft patrols in the area to prevent any escalation or clashes between groups,” Mr Adeyinka noted.

This is not the first time lightning has killed cattle in Ondo. In 2019, 36 cows died in a similar manner at the Oke-Owa hill in Ijare, Ifedore Local Government Area, in what locals described as a spiritual repercussion.

A month after that incident, another thunder strike reportedly killed eight cows on a mountain at Oyinmo quarters in Ikare Akoko, Akoko North East Local Government Area.

In both prior events, Fulani herders were said to have fled the scenes immediately after the incidents, fearing community reprisal or supernatural consequences.
