Irate youths in Tela town, Gasol Local Government Area of Taraba State, Monday, stormed a police station in the town, seized four suspected kidnappers, lynched them and dumped their bodies in a river. It was gathered that a vigilante group had, Monday, arrested four persons with knives, machetes and charms in a village close to Tela town through a tip-off from the villagers. But youths, who said they were kidnappers, demanded that the suspects be released to them as they do not have confidence in the system to dispense justice.
The Chairman of Gasol council, Prince Yahuza Yaya’u, said when the information got to him that he quickly called the Police in the area.
His words: “The DPO actually went to the vigilante group office to pick the suspected kidnappers and they were taken to Tela Police Station. That was when trouble started. “The youths mobilised in large numbers and forced their way into the Police Station and took away the suspects. “One of the suspects escaped from the youths and was on his way to Jalingo.
But we had information that they were going to Jalingo to have him arrested. So we alerted the Army at the Mutu-Biu Checkpoint. “The man was arrested there and taken to the state CIID in Jalingo; he is currently under detention at the Police Headquarters in Jalingo. “One of the vigilante members said the suspected kidnappers confessed to them that they were in Tela to kidnap two persons.
They were also said to have confessed that they were behind the recent kidnapping of one Alhaji Garba; I can’t recall his surname right now.” The state’s Police Public Relations Officer, David Mishar, confirmed that one suspected kidnapper was detained at the Police Headquarters in Jalingo.
