FORMER Spokesman of President Bola Tinubu in the Southeast, Dr. Josef Onoh on Friday, March 27, 2025 hailed the decision of the House of Representatives on the pathway to the removal of immunity of the Governors, Deputy and the Vice-President.

The bill was one of the 42 considered and passed through the second reading stage during Wednesday’s plenary session, presided over by the Deputy Speaker, Benjamin Kalu.

Sponsored by Rivers State lawmaker Solomon Bob, the bill is seeking the amendment of Section 308 of the 1999 Constitution to guide against abuse of office and to ensure transparency in governance.

Speaking with SOJ WORLDWIDE on Friday from his home in Paris, Onoh said the best that can ever happen to our democracy in Nigeria is to remove the immunity clause of the Governors and the Deputy.

“Although, the bill is yet to be passed but it has passed its second reading. When passed the excesses of the Governor will be contained.”

Sometimes in 2024 I wrote my opinion about the excesses of the Governors in the discharge of their duties, trampling on the Local Governments, the Legislatures and the judiciary.

The idea of the EFCC waiting for the Governors to finish their tenures before arrest over weighty corruption charges is not good enough for our democracy . They should account for their deeds immediately.

I want to repeat part of what I said removal of immunity clause for the Governor and his Deputy.

In my opinion, The Nigerian experience of the Immunity Clause in the constitution has been horrendous, traumatic and have yielded to social anomaly in the sense of mis-governance and underdevelopment.

The immunity clause has overwhelmingly continued to serve as conduit pipes for siphoning the nation’s wealth by Nigerian leaders without any fear of litigation or challenge and this is the right time to bring change if our nation must overcome our current challenges.

Onoh however have a reservation for the position of the Vice President, he believes the VP has a joint ticket with the President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces.

He believes the immunity clause of the VP should not be tampered with.

In as much as the governors will oppose immunity for the president alone, it is common sense to confer immunity on the president because the office of the President and decisions of the President in defence of our nation must confer the president sovereign immunity.

Governors are only dealing with internal affairs, but the president deals beyond national to international affairs. The defense of immunity has rendered ineffective and impotent the machinery set up by the government through the EFCC.”

This will be one of the greatest political and national milestones ever achieved since independence.

We only have one country and it’s our collective responsibility to stop blaming others and represent the people because political office isn’t a job, it’s temporal and after we leave office we will all return back to the people and become part of the people. What an irony!”
