THE Helsinki Court of Appeal, Finland has sentenced a Nigerian taxi driver based in Finland Olaonipeku Solomon Abiona to two years in imprisonment for rape.
Abiona raped a drunk female client at her home in Helsinki in November 2020.
The convicted person picked up a drunk woman in his taxi in November 2020. During the journey, the woman spoke to the driver and told him that she was on her way to meet her girlfriend, with whom she had had an argument.
However, the woman did not get out of the car at her destination. The convicted person and the woman agreed to go to the man’s apartment.

THE woman told the court that her intention was to buy a bottle of wine from the man. In payment, the man wanted a package of condoms, which the woman bought on the way.
According to the woman, the two were joking about the purchase, as the woman was in a relationship with another woman. According to the woman, her intention was to buy a bottle of wine and then continue her journey.
However, at the apartment, the convict threw the woman onto the bed by the shoulders, held her by the wrists, and raped her.
The woman said during the preliminary investigation that she tried to push the man off her, at which point the convicted man told her to stop and said, “It will hurt you less if you stop.”
The convict’s roommate was also present in the apartment, cooking and talking on the phone in the kitchen. As a witness, he said he had not heard anything strange.
After raping the woman, the convicted man took her to Jätkäsaari, where the woman’s girlfriend lived. After noticing her partner’s mental state, the girlfriend called the emergency center and the women went to the Seri support center.
Abiona explained in court that the woman had tried to kiss him at the end of the trip and wanted to have sex as soon as possible, already in the car.

The Helsinki District Court found the man’s explanation to be “quite implausible”, especially considering the woman’s sexual orientation.
The District Court sentenced a convicted person born in 1983 to two years and two months in prison for rape.
In addition, the court ordered him to pay a total of 5,000 euros to the woman and a total of 3,800 euros in legal costs to the state.
The convicted person appealed the verdict. The Helsinki Court of Appeal reduced the prison sentence to two years, but ordered 300 euros in legal costs.
The judgment is not final.
