A Grade 1 Area Court, Kado, Abuja, on Thursday, sentenced one Ibrahim Abubakar, 20, to a two-week imprisonment for driving a tricycle without a learner’s permit.
Abubakar, who lives at Karmo Village, Abuja, was arraigned on a count charge of causing obstruction and driving with no learner’s permit.
The Presiding Judge, Alhaji Ahmed Ado, however, gave him an option of one thousand naira fine.
He also advised him to be more careful while driving, even as he urged him to get a driver’s licence.
Ado warned him to desist from committing crime, adding that the punishment would serve as a deterrent to other would be offenders.
Before the judgment, Abubakar, who had pleaded guilty to the charge, prayed the court to temper justice with mercy.
Earlier, the prosecutor, Judith Obatomi, told the court that on July 30, the convict committed the offence around the Life Camp junction, Abuja.
Obatomi said that Abubakar obstructed the road with his tricycle even though, he was still a learner without a learner’s permit to show that he was still learning.
The prosecutor further said that the team of police on patrol in the area questioned him but he did not give a satisfactory explanation.
Obatomi, however, that during the police investigation, he confessed to the crime, which is punishable under Section 39 of the Road Traffic Act.
