It was on a Sunday morning, 33 years ago, on April 22, 1990 when we woke up to hear martial music on our radio. A bloodiest military coup spearheaded by unassuming gentleman, a Military Officer, Major Gideon Orkar took place at the Dodan Barracks, Obalende, Lagos.
They came to forcefully took over power from President General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida (Rtd) popularly referred to as IBB who planned to become a life president.
A group of young military officers mainly from the Middle-Belt States and the South came together to plan the bloodiest coup in the history of Nigeria that failed. The coup was allegedly sponsored by a businessman guru, Chief Great Ogboru from Delta State.
The Gideon Orkar’s speech was repeated on the radio until the then Lagos State Military Governor, Colonel Alagbe Rasaki came on air through Radio Lagos stammering to make a broadcast which was later supported by General Sani Abacha”s nationwide speech that finally foiled the coup.
From Major Gideon Orkar’s speech 33 years ago one will realise that all that he had said had all come to pass. It is still part of what we are witnessing till date. Their youthful exuberance of excising some states from the North same day of the coup made other military officers who supported the coup from the North to back out.
