The management of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-ife through the Division of Student Affairs has on the 24th of last month released another bombshell of policy on accommodation of the students.
In a notice to inform occupants of Halls of residence for the just concluded 20189/2019 academic session of proper evacuation procedure, the DSA used the same medium to inform the returning students that there would no longer be bed space available for them in campus hostels come next session (2019/2020).
As their vacation is still ongoing, the returning students are to note that there would no longer be chance for them to ballot for bed spaces as it used to be any longer. Only fresh students are to be considered.
For the last two sessions, the school management’s accommodation policy has suddenly turned unfavorable as it has been pushing a larger number of students out of the campus environment for shelter.
And going by the various life-endangering happenings especially robberies leading to loss of lives that have been recorded on the account of the students living outside the campus since the evolution of the policies, it is glaring that students’ lives are not secured a bit outside the campus environment.
But it is highly disheartening that instead of the management to attend to the welfare of the students by finding possible ways to reduce if not totally stop the increasing number of students living outside the school environment, the management is rather making moves to compound it.
More on-campus hostels could be erected rather than engaging in other projects that are not urgent. Just that the school authority is not deeming this fit at all.
We just pray that God should keep safeguarding the lives of these students.
