FORMER Presidential candidate of the Labour Party, LP in the 2023 Presidential election, Peter Obi has received mass attacks from the Presidency, Daniel Bwala and Reno Omokri over his reported statement that “democracy has collapsed in Nigeria.”
Obi had earlier said “A country cannot function where the rule of law is trampled upon, where the separation of powers is disregarded, and where judicial decisions are treated as mere suggestions. If we continue this way, we are undermining the future of our democracy.”
AIT reported that Obi at the colloquium of the Emeka Ihedioha, said “democracy has totally collapsed in Nigeria insisting that all the achievements recorded since the turn of the fourth republic have been eroded by actions of the present administration.”
In a swift reactions, the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga berated Obi for reported reckless statement,
“I listened multiple times to former Governor Peter Obi’s statement in this clip, where he claims that democracy has collapsed in Nigeria.
His hyperbolic remarks, suited for headlines, have been made without deep reflection and lack a solid logical foundation. How can a democracy that has strengthened over the past 26 years be said to have collapsed?
Only a discontented and disgruntled Peter, who benefits from the very free speech democracy provides, could perceive such a democratic downfall through his lens.

If democracy had indeed collapsed, as Peter claims, and we were living under a regime antithetical to democratic principles, he would not have been able to make his comments on Monday at Emeka Ihedioha’s colloquium.
I will urge him to watch what he says and restrain himself from playing to the gallery.”
“On his part, former Presidential Candidate of the Labour Party in 2023 presidential election, Peter Obi told the gathering that democracy has totally collapsed in Nigeria insisting that all the achievements recorded since the turn of the fourth republic have been eroded by actions of the present administration.
Interestingly, Peter Obi did not hold Local Government elections in Anambra for seven years, which was unconstitutional. He became Governor in 2006 and only held elections in 2014. Whereas LGA elections are to be held every four years. Yet, here he is today, saying democracy in Nigeria has died.
This is about Peter Obi and his failed Presidential ambition, which died the day his Yes Daddy audio threatening ‘Religious War’ on Muslims was leaked, not about Nigeria.”
Special Adviser to the President on Policy and Communication, Daniel Bwala described Obi as a failed politician who is trying to instigate hate speech.
“It is funny how failed politicians are trying to re-define democracy.
@PeterObi
said democracy has collapsed.
Does he even know the meaning of democracy.
When people were fighting for democracy, Gregory was buying and selling.
He doesn’t have a history of any democratic activism from his school days to date.
His expertise lies in instigating hate speech and vitriol
Talk Is cheap”
