The Governor took the action to curtain the spread of the deadly dreaded disease, CORONA VIRUS (COVID-19) pandemic in Rivers state.
The action of Wike reminds me of the evergreen song of my music mentor, Chief Ebenezer Obey, “T’Oluwa ba gbadura T’Oluwa ba gbe o ga, to ba fi e s’ipo ko ma ma ba be je, eniyan lo l’eni o, Oluwa lo l’ola o” (If God puts you in a position of power, don’t destroy it, you are the owner of today but God owns tomorrow).
Wike has killed a fly with a sledge hammer. What would have motivated him with a thought to demolish two hotels for flouting a lockdown order thereby rendering many people jobless and pulling the owners back to square one?
What stopped Wike from ordering the closure of the hotels for months? Why the demolitions?
Wike took this untenable decision for this reason, he said,
“Government has no alternative but to apply the Executive order which I signed before the lockdown of Obio/Akpor and Port Harcourt. I called all the Traditional Rulers and Council Chairmen and told them to ensure that no hotel operates in the State. We are not saying it will be forever. This is for now, so that we know where we are. To reduce the cases and check the spread. Whether you are PDP or not, all we are saying is that nobody is above the law. If we can do this to a PDP person, then you know we are not discriminatory. Everyone must obey. Whether you are in PDP, SDP or no party, you must obey the law. If any other person does the same thing, the same rule will apply”.
I hope Wike remember he has few more years to spend on that seat? He should have learnt a lesson from the former Ekiti State noisemaker, Ayodele Fayose. Where is Fayose today? Although he is alive but he has gone into political oblivion forever.
Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki demolished a Five-Star hote of a man loyal to his political godfather, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole just because he had a disagreement with the latter. When the ‘going was good’ the hotelier did not build his hotel on the ‘right of way’ but had to give way now that there was a political divide.
Nigerians actually needs iron hands but Wike has gone to the extreme.
Nyemson Wike should know that everything will be over one day. The life we are in is transient not to talk of political office.
If there is anyone reading this piece and are in Wike’s shoes, they should remember that the position of authority they cherished so much will come to a halt one day. Those whom they destroy when in power could be their likely saviour tomorrow.
Power is transient, we should tread softly.
