In his public lecture, Capt. Emmanuel Great who is Tourism Business Coach and the Director of Studies of Exodus Int’l delivered a lecture extensively on the importance of MKO Abiola Airport for the revival of dwindling economy of the State of Osun.
It is disheartening to note that while United States of America had over 19,000 airports with 2,500 public commercial airports and 17,000 privately owned airports but Nigeria had only 22 airports with only six of it functioning properly.
Capt. Emmanuel said;
“Aviation connects the people, places, business, goods, and services.
If there is any country in the world that needs aviation, it is the developing countries because aviation alone transports close to two billion travelers annually.â€
“In the business of aviation, everybody wins, the government, the people, workers, the residents, hospitality (hotels), traders, and the economy.â€
“Tourism and Air Transport Industry complement each other.Â
Tourism depends on transportation to bring visitors, while the transportation industry depends on tourism to generate demand for its services.”
The facilitator said out of the six regions in Nigeria, the southwest had only three functioning airports, this is in spite of having the highest numbers of tourist attractions.
Capt. Emmanuel and the participants called for the upgrade of tourist centres, in at least, five major cities in the state; Osogbo, Ile-Ife, Ilesha, Ede, Ila Orangun. Out of about 145 attractions in the state, only 63 were so far documented by the office of Culture and Tourism.
He cited Zimbawean and Singaporean Airports as the engine room of economic growth and development of the environment in their countries of origin.
For example, Victoria Water Falls Hotel in Zimbabwe attracts over 120 visitors daily averagely because of the tourist attractions.
While Singapore has the best airport in the world with attractive tourist centres which includes; swimming pool, free movie 24/7, butterfly etc. It has been the best in the world in the past six years.
The participants called for immediate priority for the new government of Gboyega Oyetola to put machinery in motion for the completion of MKO Abiola through Public Private Partnership (PPP) to connect it to all the tourist attractions in the state.
It was generally agreed that to make an airport viable it should be connected to tourism.
