The Osun State Education Marshals popularly known as Edu Marshals spent this year’s 2020 Christmas on empty stomach, no thanks to unpaid salaries owed them by the Osun State Government.
According to a reliable source who wants to remain anonymous, told SOJ WORLDWIDE, http://www.sojworldnews.com that they have not been paid for the past eight months.
To make their matter worse, no one wants to take full responsibility for their take-home pay which is N15,000 per month. Our findings revealed that the last payment paid was for March 2020 paid in May. That was the last payment received to date.
Our source was of the opinion that the Governor of Osun State, Mr Adegboyega Oyetola who is a friend of the workers might not be aware of the trauma these categories of workers are passing through.
They are now calling on Governor Oyetola to come to their aid to pay them their monthly stipends.
The Special Adviser on Education Hon Olawumi Jamiu spoke with our reporter to get the facts from the state government’s angle.
According to Jamiu, the Edu Marshals were outsourced by the state government and their contract with the government ended in March 2020.

When asked why they have not been paid in the past eight months, he said,
“That is not correct because Edu Marshals is not a government agency, it is an outsourced service. Whatever they have with their employers is not known to us. But I could tell you that it is an adhoc service.”
“When the school is not in session they don’t get any job to do, so when there was CORONA VIRUS and we shut down for six months, the service provider would pay them because they are not government employees.”

“It is based on service that we pay the service providers.”
When asked if the outsource company could not pay because the state government did not fund it. He said the government regularize and restructure their contract it is renewable every year.
He went further that their contract lapsed in March 2020 and it has not been renewed, therefore it is left for their employer to pay the Edu Marshal from its own purse.
Meanwhile, the Edu Marshals confirmed to SOJ WORLDWIDE that the Commissioner of Education, Hon Oladoyin Folorunsho promised them that their salaries is awaiting the approval of the Governor.
The Edu Marshals are responsible for enforcement of discipline in primary and secondary schools in Osun State. For instance, they were given the power to apprehend any student roaming the streets during school hours. They are also part of invigilating team during school exams.
At this junctures, the Edu Marshals are at the crossroads with no sense of direction on who their paymaster is. They do not know they were outsourced according to our findings.
Although they are looking at the direction of the state government to come to their rescue, now that the government said they were not responsible for their employments, who will now bail them out under this tough economic climate?
