OSUN: INEC displays Sensitive Election Materials, warns against thuggery, rigging, vote buying

THE Sensitive Election materials for the Osun State House of Assembly election was displayed on Wednesday, March 15, 2023 at the State branch of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) in Osogbo by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

The Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Mutiu Agboke said the Commission has made every necessary arrangements for the State House of Assembly election to ensure free, fair and credible election on March 18, 2023.

The REC said, as usual, the Commission has brought out all the Sensitive Materials kept at the CBN for the past weeks for inspection by all stakeholders including, Police, ICPC, National Orientation Agency (NOA), the media and all representatives of political parties contesting the elections.

The Sensitive Materials includes, Ballot Papers and Result Sheets which are batched separately for all the 30 Local Government Areas in the State.

The State Commissioner of Police was represented by the Deputy Commissioner of Police, DCP Dike Charles in charge of Operations.

He said the Police are ready to maintain peace and orderliness and noted that all infractions during the last Presidential election in some dark spots has enable them to plan ahead.

He advised parents to warn their wards not to be involved in any form of violence, rigging of election or vote buying as anyone involved in such nefarious activities will face the full wrath of the law.

The Director of National Orientation Agency (NOA) in Osun State, Mrs Kikelomo Hamid said all their officers are represented in all the Local Governments in the State. She said they have enlightened the electorates on how to maintain peace before, during and after election and they should not entertain any fear of coming out to vote because security arrangements have been put in place against fear or intimidation.

Meanwhile, the Resident Commissioner of ICPC in Osun State, Mr Ademola Bakare said his men are ready to contain any form of fraud, vote buying before, during and after the House of Assembly elections. Bakare said their major priority is to maintain peace and non-violent election devoid of destruction and to maintain the sanctity of the election.

He said some arrests were made in the last Presidential and National Assembly elections and investigation is ongoing. He went further that their strategy includes containing infractions before, during and after the election and to nip vote buying in the bud. He added that if a culprit is not arrested at the point of process of election does not mean the suspect will not be arrested.

He shed more light on vote buying that it does not necessarily mean inducing voters at the Polling Units, some voters trade their votes on promissory inducements before and after the elections. “The mantra is don’t do it, if you do it you will be arrested because we have our intelligence gathering. That you are not arrested on the spot does not mean you will not be arrested.”
