PETER OBI, A Misconstrued Saint That Is Not So Sainty by FATAI ARIBISALA IBRAHIM

Anyone that is on social media platforms can see for himself/herself and does not need to be told that the supporters of Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate, are brassy, brazen, cheeky, and disrespectful.

And what is even more gulling is that Peter Obi, their lord and master, is doing little or nothing to clip their overgrown wings or cage them. But we can forgive Peter Obi because even he himself is a frequent target of his supporters’ impish pleasure in being impudent.

Peter Obi is perhaps the strangest among the many presidential candidates that are contesting the 2023 presidential election, unless we except Omoyele Sowore of African Action Congress (AAC).

I have studied the character and personality of Peter Obi in great detail and the conclusion I was able to draw from the studies is that he will doubtlessly be a good man, loyal, honest, and industrious, only if permitted to be on some lower level of political mediocrity such as Minister of State or Special Adviser to the president where he will not have access to public funds with which he can help himself.

As a state governor, he was a kind of historic specimen. Other state governors of his time looked on him with scorn.

For instance, former governor Ayodele Fayose of Ekiti State said that “Rochas Okorocha has crazy ideas but Peter Obi has none. No idea at all!”

Not withstanding his recent rumbustious attitudes, Peter Obi is a man that is servile. I do not mean loyal. I mean servile to his political master, Atiku Abubakar, the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

As a student, he was a slow, dull youth with no capacity for study, which made him to earn an ordinary pass in philosophy from an obscure university.

Up to the time he was given an important post by his father, he had had no success in any kind of business.

His father had set him up as a business man and endowed him with plenty of money. That is how he met Atiku Abubakar, a great businessman of high eminence, and he remains to this day and he will remains probably for life Atiku’s humble and compliant servitor.

In 2003, things were not going so well for Peter Obi and his business. Atiku Abubakar decided to do something about it. He fell under the influence of two brothers— Andy and Ifeayin Ubah, the political kingmakers of Anambra State in those days.

Another was Frank Enwerem, an impeached Senate President during Olusegun Obasanjo administration. They sold Obasanjo on the idea that Peter Obi’s business could use a little dose of Anambra State money to survive.

Frank Enwerem was the most persuasive. Like all Senate Presidents, he was corrupt.

They believe the way to prevent Peter Obi’s business empire from crumbling was to make him a state governor. Frank Enwerem had a pet theory that the great enemy of mankind is a politician that sees the business of his pals going bankrupt and refuses to hoist it up with public funds.

Obi believes wholeheartedly in Enwerem’s theory and if not that his political engagements did not allow him to have much spare time, he would have written a book to prove that investing public funds in one’s family business is one of the most reliable and dependable ways of wading off bankruptcy.
