BEHIND the news of a court case on the alleged murder of MBA-EXECUTIVE student of the Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Timothy Oludare Adegoke in 2021 at the Hilton Hotels owned by Dr. Rahman Adedoyin who is a prime suspect in the murder case along with six of his workers took place at the Osun State High Court (1), Osogbo on Monday, April 25, 2022.
The entrance to the court premises was manned by stern looking policemen from the Osun State Police Command who interrogated newsmen and others before they were allowed in. The same scenario took place at the courtroom where only one journalist was allowed to represent their news media in the court.
The courtroom witnessed an unusual crowd of Lawyers who probably came to see and learn from the arguments of the case between Defense Counsels and the Prosecuting Counsels led by the Human Rights Activist and Legal Luminary, Mr. Femi Falana whom majority came to witness.
The suspects, Dr. Rahman Adedoyin led other suspects without the Second Defendant who came in after about 20 minutes.
The case started with arguments after Falana introduced himself as the new Prosecuting Counsel having taken over from Police Prosecutor under the directive of the Osun State Attorney-General. The Defense Counsels objected saying the court should be officially served and make the transfer formal hence they argued that the court must be duly served. They argued further that the case was a federal case hence the Attorney-General of the Federation must be involved in the withdrawal of the case from police prosecuting Lawyer to Falana.
In view of the arguments, the Justice gave few minutes recess for things to be sorted out.
On resumption from the recess, Falana rose up to inform the court that he was no longer taking over the State Prosecuting team but he was there to lead them in the prosecution.This was agreed by both parties.
As the arguments continued, the second defendant, a lady who later came to join other suspects in the witness box at the resumption of the case suddenly collapsed. She was rushed out for medical attention. She was brought back few minutes later.
The Counsel to Adedoyin told the court that his client has no witness in the course of the case while the Counsel to the Second defendant who was a woman call for the adjournment of the case on two fundamental reasons,
1) Her client was indisposed and she should be allowed to attend to her health issues and, 2) He was not prepared because his flight from Abuja to Lagos was delayed by five hours the previous day. He said one of the Defense Counsel was not present in the court as he is preparing to defend his PhD Thesis at the Babcock University, Ogun State.
The Justice told the Counsels from both parties to agree on the next adjournment date.
After their agreement, the case was adjourned to May 25th 26th 27th, 30thvand 31st of May, 2021.
Falana, at the end of the court proceedings told newsmen that he was satisfied with the day’s proceedings and that he has faith in the Judge that justice will be served.
Brother of the deceased, Gbade Adegoke and other family members, cream of newsmen, Law students were present to witness the celebrated case of the decade.
