Chelsea manager, Maurizio Sarri, has suggested that N’Golo Kante does not possess the technical qualities needed to play in Jorginho’s role at Chelsea and claims the midfielder was “too attacking†in the 3-1 defeat to Tottenham on Saturday.
Having played as a defensive midfielder during his three seasons in the Premier League, Kante is now being asked by Sarri to play in a more advanced position following Jorginho’s arrival at Stamford Bridge.
Despite Kante struggling to adjust to his new role, Sarri has insisted he only wants Jorginho or Cesc Fabregas to play at the base of his midfield and has urged Kante to work on his positioning.
“I think as you know I want to play a central midfielder who is a very technical player, for me the centre midfielder is either Jorginho or Fabregas. I don’t want Kante in this position.
“N’golo wanted to solve the match [against Tottenham] in the first 15 mins but in the wrong way, he attacked the other box too much, I think this one is not one of the best characteristics of Kante, but it was only a reaction to the difficulties,†Sarri said.
Asked if Kante fully understands his role in the team, Sarri replied:
“Maybe, maybe it’s only a question of time.
“But Kante has to stay near to Jorginho, especially when the ball is on the other side.
“When he is on the left he has to stay very close to Jorginho.â€
