Senator Kwakwanso was elected as the Executive Governor of Kano State between 1999 and 2003, under the flag of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP). He lost re-election to Malam Ibrahim Shekarau
He was re-elected as Kano state governor on 27 April 2011 and sworn in on 29 May 2011 for a second term in office.
He was appointed as the Minister of Defence in President Olusegun Obasanjo’s cabinet in 2003. In 2007, he was also appointed as the Presidential Special Envoy to Somalia and Darfur by the Obasanjo administration after losing the bid from his party to contest the 2007 general governorship election.

He is currently the Senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria representing Kano Central.

Supporters of the former governor of Kano state are already mobilising to campaign for him ahead of 2019 Former Kano state governor, Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso, has commenced mobilisation and sensitisation of his supporters across all states and local governments of the federation ahead of the 2019 presidential election.
Senator Kwankwaso, 61, a former minister of defence under the Obasanjo administration, is reputed to be one of Nigeria’s influential politicians in recent times.
Senator Uwajimogu In a sensitisation meeting held in Owerri, the Imo state capital, scores of supporters in the movement donning their trademark red cap reaffirmed their loyalty and commitment to the group.
His words: “Our leader, Senator Kwankwaso has been consistent in his political ideology and in his principle of integrity. And I wish to convey his goodwill to every member of his political family here gathered while stressing that in leadership, credibility is everything. And that is the selling point of our leader.
“There is no time to waste and we cannot afford to lose any ground to anybody or group. It is my hope that you will take our message of hope down to the grassroots where most of you operate.” Also at the meeting was the southeast coordinator of the group, Prince Matthew Onwukwe.
