His first disappointment was that he thought President Tinubu would pick his running mate from the Northwest, and it would be him.
When he was not tapped to be the vice Presidential nominee, he became hostile to candidate Tinubu and ensured that Asiwaju lost the Presidential election in Kaduna State.
The second dismay is that, as a consolation prize, he expected to be the minister from Kaduna, but he failed his ministerial screening because of the various atrocities he committed. Not wanting to accept responsibility for the deaths, sorrows, tears and blood he unleashed during his Darfur-like Janjaweed eight-year tyrannical tenure as Kaduna Governor, he began pointing fingers at the innocent.
The third disillusionment was that his political godson outsmarted and politically castrated him in Kaduna to the extent that just a year after leaving office, each of the 34 members of the Kaduna State House of Assembly indicted Nasir el-Rufai for abuse of office, money laundering and other sundry crimes.
Nasir could not sustain the loyalty of even one member. Yet, he boasts that in 2027 he would remove a Tinubu who has sustained the loyalty of every member of the forty-person Lagos State House of Assembly.
The fourth dispiritedness is that he expected Governor Uba Sani to fail without his support, but under Governor Sani, Kaduna is more secure, has increased internally generated revenue and Muslim and Christian residents are collaborating with each other and the government instead of what obtained under the Butcher of Kaduna. Spies in his camp have revealed that Mr. el-Rufai is particularly miffed that Kaduna State generated the highest internal revenue in Northern Nigeria for 2024 at almost ₦100 billion.
The fifth disenchantment is that the various Northerners that President Tinubu appointed into office are all doing better than he did and are outshining him in popularity.
The sixth disgruntlement is that he expected his fallback position to be the number one opposition politician, but Waziri Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi have taken that role from him.
The seventh bewilderment stems from the economic policies of the Tinubu administration, which are beginning to yield fruit. Our GDP grew by 3.84% for the full year 2024, and the inflation rate dipped below 25%, while the unemployment rate dropped to 4.3%. This has left Nasir el-Rufai with the only recourse of personal attacks against the President and his strongest Northern allies, including Vice President Kashim Shettima and National Security Adviser Malam Nuhu Ribadu.

His eighth befuddlement is that his own first son, Bello el-Rufai, not wanting to jeopardise his return to the House of Representatives in 2027, has refused to pitch his political tent with his father. He preferred to publicly acknowledge Governor Uba Sani as his principal and advise his father to reconcile with the Chief Executive of Kaduna.
The ninth discontentment comes from the home front. His own first wife, Hadiza el-Rufai, publicly admitted to Nigerians on Monday, November 19, 2024, that her son, Bashir el-Rufai, would not have publicly or privately criticised President Tinubu and his government if the President had given his father a plum job.
In other words, those who know him intimately have told us that this is all about a scorned politician!

The tenth shock he experienced is the realisation that he is not well-rated in the politics of Northern Nigeria, which was made embarrassingly clear in the most significant event in Arewa’s history since President Muhammadu Buhari was elected in 2015: The launch of General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida’s autobiography on Thursday, February 20, 2025. On that day, Nasir el-Rufai was absent. And from feelers from fifth columnists around him, the snob hit him like a ton of bricks.
The eleventh grouse of Malam el-Rufai is that other than his personal lackeys, no prominent or reputable Northern politician has come out to speak in his favour. They have all given him a cold shoulder and an OYO treatment: On Your Own.
Finally, his twelfth grouse is that, on Thursday, February 7, 2019, he made a mess of his international reputation by threatening European Union observers with death if they intervened in Nigeria’s impending Presidential elections, which were to take place on Saturday, February 16, 2019. Nasir el-Rufai is uncomfortable with exile or long-term overseas stay, so he is stuck in Nigeria.
My fellow citizens of Nigeria, there you have it laid bare before you. These are the reasons why Nasir el-Rufai is unhinged. His chickens have come home to roost, and he does not like the eggs they are laying!
