The 32-team stage features the four Premier League sides as well as European giants such as Barcelona, Juventus, Bayern Munich and the current holders Real Madrid.
Liverpool drew PSG and Napoli; Manchester United face Juventus and Cristiano Ronaldo; Spurs were handed a tough draw against Barcelona and Internazionale, while Manchester City fared best.
Regardless of competitions from Ronaldo and Salah, Luka Modric was presented with the player of the year accolade in recognition of his role propelling Real Madrid to a third straight Champions League title and inspiring Croatia to the World Cup final.
Most noteworthy, Real Madrid’s Sergio Ramos was awarded defender of the year, giving a mischievous tap on the shoulder to Mohamed Salah as he exited the stage to take his seat in the auditorium. Salah appeared not to acknowledge Ramos, possibly revealing lingering ill feeling after suffering a dislocated shoulder under a heavy challenge by the Spaniard, this, however, hindered his involvement for Egypt at the World Cup, in last season’s final.

However, Group C feels like the most exciting one – coupled with dramas, there could be goals galore, with Red Star an unknown(ish) quantity in amongst them to cause chaos.
So, who qualifies? Group A: Atletico, Monaco perhaps? Group B: Barcelona, Tottenham? Group C: hard to call. Group D: Lokomotiv Moscow and Porto? Group E: Bayern, Ajax? Group F: Manchester City, Lyon? Group G: Real Madrid and Roma? Group H: Juve and Man Utd? Could be but it’s difficult to tell here. Lots of drama in the Uefa Champions League.
