FIRST Sunday of the month of June 5, 2022 was a black day for all residents of Owo, the hometown of the Executive Governor of Ondo State, Arakunrin Oluwarotimi Akeredolu.
It was a day gunmen suspected to be Fulani Herdsmen stormed St. Francis Catholic Church Cathedral threw a dynamite on the Altar and while people were scampering for safety, the bloodthirsty gunmen started shooting sporadically at children, women, men and anyone in sight.
A source identified simply as Dayo told our reporter that there was no one among the church members who escaped gunshots, According to him, it is either they are dead or they are seriously injured.
First Sunday of every month people usually trooped out to the church to offer thanksgiving to God for sustaining their lives into the sixth month in the year.
He said it was announced that anyone whose relatives is attending Catholic Church in the town should go and carry their dead relatives otherwise they should go to the mortuary to identify them.
He added that scores of dead victims have been deposited at the mortuary while the wounded ones were rushed to the Federal Medical Centre, Owo.
According to reports from eyewitness, the Ondo State Police Commissioner has arrived the scene of the incident for an on-the-spot assessment.
There was no any arrest made as at the time of filing this report and no confirmation on the actual numbers of casualties but not less than 50 according to an eyewitness.
