BENUE State Police Command
have rescued the 14 passengers Abducted by gunmen on Thursday, April 3, 2025 in Otukpo local government area.
The incident occurred around the Otukpo Burnt Bricks area, where the commercial vehicle belonging to Benue Links was ambushed by armed assailants.
The bus driver and one passenger sustained gunshot wounds during the attack and were later confirmed dead.
According to the Spokesperson for the Benue State Police Command, Superintendent Sewuese Anene, the assailants fled the scene with 14 passengers to an undisclosed location in the surrounding forest.
“Upon receiving the distress call, our officers, in conjunction with the State Civil Protection Guard, swiftly moved to the scene of the attack,” SP Anene told reporters on Friday.
“They found the driver and a passenger inside the vehicle with gunshot injuries.”
The victims were rushed to a nearby hospital where doctors confirmed both had succumbed to their injuries.
A search operation for the kidnapped passengers was immediately launched within the surrounding forest.

“On 4 April, at about 3pm, our operatives encountered the kidnappers deep in the forest and engaged them in a fierce gun battle,” Anene stated.
She said the police’s superior firepower forced the kidnappers to flee, leaving their captives behind.
“The criminals, overwhelmed, abandoned the victims and escaped with gunshot wounds,” she added.
Despite the successful rescue, two of the victims had suffered machete wounds.

The rescued passengers were transported to a hospital for medical attention, where one additional person was later confirmed dead.
“Fourteen victims were rescued in total. One sadly died in the hospital, while the others are responding to treatment,” Anene explained.
The Commissioner of Police in Benue State, Steve Yabanet, expressed his condolences to the families of those who lost their lives during the incident.
In a statement, Yabanet assured the public that efforts were ongoing to apprehend the fleeing suspects and bring them to justice.
He also urged residents of Otukpo and neighbouring communities to be vigilant and report any suspicious individuals, particularly those with bullet wounds.
“We believe several of the attackers were injured in the crossfire and may seek medical attention. We appeal to the public to assist by providing any useful information,” the commissioner said.
The state government has also been briefed on the development, with authorities vowing to intensify security surveillance along major routes in the state.
This incident adds to the growing concerns over the safety of commuters and increasing cases of banditry and kidnapping in Nigeria’s Middle Belt region.
Benue Links, the state-owned transport company involved in the incident, has not yet issued an official statement regarding the attack on its bus.
Meanwhile, security operations continue in the forests of Otukpo, as police intensify efforts to track down the perpetrators.
