“PRESS STATEMENT.
10th March, 2022.
Crisis in NURTW
Due to the recent crises rocking the Lagos State council of the NURTW, I find it imperative to address the good people of Lagos, NURTW members, the state government and the necessary security agencies. There have been some crises in our national body, the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW).
These internal crises stamped” from undue interference from the national body with which we have engaged severally and dialogued to no avail.
All attempts to have an amicable resolution and make the national body tow” the right path have failed. While trying to call the Government to our plights, we have also conducted a peaceful protest to the Lagos State Government with aim of having a peaceful resolution. We explored all these avenue because we are law-abiding and responsible citizens and a lover of peace.
It’s been over two years that my team and I have been piloting the affairs of the Lagos State NURTW and I make bold to say that we have recorded huge success across board. We have improved the working condition of our members, engaged private Organizations that have given out new vehicles to our members to replace their old ones, we have massively trained our members on how best to discharge their duties. Our rebranding programs have started yielding positive results as the public perception of the NURTW is now changing for the better.
“We may not be where we ought to be but we are not where we used to be”.

The union has also been peaceful due to the all-inclusive policy of leadership style we have employed during this period. One would now begins to wonder the cause of the recent and repeated crises in the union. The answer is not far fetched, it is because the national body has decided to illegally and unduly interfere in the affairs of the Lagos State chapter of the union.
We cherish the peace we have beee enjoying in Lagos and we will not allow anyone to truncate the tranquility currently being experienced by Lagos State Union members as well as the good people of Lagos State.
In order to promote peace, harmony, legality, I, Musiliu Akinsanya, on behalf of all members of the National Union of Road Transport Workers(NURTW), Lagos State chapter, with over 200 units, hereby resolved to:
i. immediately withdraw our membership (and operations) from the National body of NURTW for peace to reign in the State. We shall promptly write to Lagos State Governor, Lagos State Ministry of Transportation and other relevant Agencies about our decision.
It is important to state that our action is in line with Section 40 of the Constitution of Federal Republic Nigeria 1999 (as amended),which provides thus: “Every person shall be entitled to assembly freely and associate with other persons, and in particular he may form or belong to any political party, trade union or any association for the protection of his interests.” This means that every person shall be entitled to join an association and exit freely without any form of molestation.

I still don’t understand the importance of agberos on our roads. The inflate transport fares at will. Beat up people anyhow. Do agberos pay into states account while forcefully collecting monies from innocent passengers by means of increase fares anyhow?
If there’s no record of useful contributions to the growth of states they operate, then why engaging them on our streets?OMASE OO…Sorry case.
