SERENA Williams has been one of the most dominant players on the WTA circuit. The sheer dominance she expressed on the court was second to none. She is arguably considered to be the Greatest Player of all time and is one of the most decorated female athletes of the Open Era, winning a total of 23 Grand Slam singles titles.

Williams broke through the tennis scene with her first Grand Slam win at the US Open in 1999, aged just 18. Since then, there was no stopping the American, she has won all the accolades there are to win in tennis. Williams has a record 23 Grand Slam Singles titles to her name, won the Olympic Gold twice, and has completed the Golden Slam in both singles and doubles. She also achieved the ‘Serena Slam’ twice, winning all four Grand Slams in a row.

Why Serena Williams is not playing?

Williams is yet to play a match in nearly six months. The American was last seen in action at the first-round match in Wimbledon last year, where she was forced to retire mid-match with a hamstring injury. Serena has been plagued by injuries in the latter stages of her career and as of now, she hasn’t given any update on her recovery status.

When will Serena Williams play next?

The 23-time Grand Slam champion is yet to announce a timeline for her return. With constant injuries and age catching up with the 40-year-old, it will be hard to predict her return. However, Serena has stated her decision to return to tour and compete at her highest level. After announcing her withdrawal from the 2022 Australian Open, Williams said she is still adamant about her return saying ” am excited to return and compete at my highest level.”

However, a return during the clay-court swing might be unlikely for the Former World No.1, considering her modest record on the surface. Williams has won the French Open thrice before, which is a staggering record but still looks diminutive to her performance on grass and hard courts. If she recovers in time, a comeback during the Wimbledon is more likely for the American veteran. She has won Wimbledon seven times – her joint-most successful Slam along with the Australian Open

Can Serena Williams win another Grand Slam?

Williams last won a Grand Slam at the Australian Open back in 2017. Since then she reached four finals, but couldn’t cross the final hurdle on all those occasions. Her last Grand Slam final was at the US Open in 2019, where she was upset by Bianca Andreescu in straight sets.

The American currently sits at second position for winning the most Grand Slams, behind Margaret Court, who won 24. With just 1 Major, separating them both, Williams will look to have one last shot at winning a Grand Slam title and equal the all-time record. But the clock seems to be ticking for the 40-year-old as she enters the twilight of her career and her chances of having one last moment of glory appear to be dwindling.
